Marketing for Authors

Fog of Fortune by Michael Glassford
Fog of Fortune by Michael Glassford

This is both a resource and instruction for authors regarding how to market your book.

One of the first things I want to express to you is that your time is valuable. I learned early in my business experience that it was sometimes better for me to get in and do what was necessary to know my business. I also learned that while I have specific talents, other things will take me longer to do than if someone else did them.

For example, I am great with sales and marketing but when I start a business, I do the accounting for a while. Then when I can afford it, sometimes before I can afford it, I hire a bookkeeper. I have taken classes on accounting for small businesses and know what the difference is between a profit and loss statement and a balance sheet. They both tell me about the health of the business. So I could do the accounting myself, but a bookkeeper will do it in less than half the time. I, on the other hand, can make more money by being in the field selling and helping others with marketing. I have learned to do what I do best as often as I can. I hire others that can work faster and cost me less than if I use my time to do their jobs. Entrepreneurs must learn to do this. So must authors.

What does this have to do with authors? When you can allow a professional to do what they do best (marketing your books), and it allows you to do more of what you do best (write more books) and make more money, you win from that point forward. You also have a strategic partner that will be there as you grow, helping you to grow.

I wrote a white paper on e-books and self-publishing books that is a valuable resource you are welcome to download it for free. It gives you advice from the idea stage through choosing the title. From the cover to making money. There are several useful marketing ideas; including how to get more buzz going for your book and getting it featured on book sites to get others to pay attention and buy the book.

Download the E-book White Paper here.

This white paper also gives you more than forty places to promote your book. Many are free. A few charge but are worth it when you can afford them. This white paper is geared more toward e-books but works great for self-publishing too. I will be putting out another white paper soon on writing and promoting a self-published book. It will deal with actually getting it into the hands of book sellers and to big stores that will have you come be the author of the day.

I have been asked to come up with packages for authors to promote their books. We offer a wide variety of programs but these are what we have put together from discussions with authors like you:

Web page and blog site – for one book or more. From $299 setup and $50 per month.

Starting with Amazon Kindle to then onto book promotions sites. Getting listed and featured on as many of these sites as possible. From $199 to $599 (for the paid ones)

Writing the right book description that will draw your readers in and help them decide to buy your book. From $100

Social media promotions – Beyond your friends and family. This includes posts to social media sites twice per day twice per week to four sites for four weeks. We would also include one post to all of your friends and their friends (premium post). Setup of $99, $440 per month.

Press releases and other promotional materials. This depends on what you will need. From $100 +

Editing of your book – The price will depend on the page count and how much editing you want done. If you have done the fixing of the spelling, grammar, typos, and conflicting details or consistency in character’s names, then it costs less. Call for pricing.

Ghost writing your book – You’ve got the ideas and have figured out the book but just can’t write or can’t get to writing it. Maybe you want to write a business book or a novel. We can help with that. Call and talk to us about what we can provide.

Running an effective email program – Collecting and sending appropriate emails to your readers. From $110 plus $50 per month to continue.

Video promotions – Author interviews, promotions for the book, reader response videos and more. This varies depending on what you want or need. From $75 to $500 each.
